I hadn\u2019t heard of him until I started studying at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joerivanveen.com\/blog\/category\/fotoacademie\/\">Fotoacademie<\/a> a couple of years ago. As far as landscape photography goes I was mostly exposed to Bernd and Hilla Becher and their pupils such as Thomas Struth and Andreas Gursky, and also a bit of Ansel Adams, no getting around him there of course. Stark factual work that attempts to impress the viewer with consistency, if not rigidness, and technical proficiency. So for me the landscape photographs by Bill Brandt were a relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joerivanveen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/bill-brandt-hands.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2008\"\/><figcaption>You can find this and other photographs by Bill Brandt at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelhoppengallery.com\/artists\/45-bill-brandt\/overview\/#\/artworks\/9596\">Michael Hoppen gallery<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Brandt\">Bill Brandt<\/a>, born in 1904, started out as a documentary photographer in the 1930\u2019s in England. His documentary work reminds me of his contemporary William Eugene Smith, probably because of the shared subject matter. But I will remember Bill Brandt for his creative whimsical landscape photographs with human bodyparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joerivanveen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/bill-brandt-fingers.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2007\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bill Brandt the artist is born<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The birth of the (successful) artist interests me, because I too want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joerivanveen.com\/blog\/how-to-be-an-artist\/\">become a successful artist<\/a>. I have so far distilled a couple of ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Be part of a social group of which many people become successful later<\/li><li>Become the prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of a successful artist, or someone rich that plays a role in the art world (investor, collector, gallery owner)<\/li><li>Create a lot of work and show it to a lot of different people<\/li><li>A tormented youth can help but isn\u2019t mandatory<\/li><li>Don\u2019t hold back &lt;- depending on how you turned out several mechanisms may put the brakes on that have to be crushed<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Bill Brandt had a somewhat tormented youth during WW I, having a German mother and English father. Later he got sick and was sent to Davos to recover (wish I were sent to Switzerland when I were sick). He subsequently had his burn-out at a young age, beating all the current burnt out millenials by almost 100 years. Afterwards well known socialite Eugenie Schwarzwald took him under her wing. I realise this was then probably in no way as simple as I describe it here. But since it is in the past, it actually really is that simple. If it were not the case, nobody would have heard of Bill Brandt. In 1928 while in Paris (or some say it was still in Vienna) he took a photograph of Ezra Pound who introduced him to Man Ray as a thank you.
